Dr. Ginsberg discusses a study on treatment response and stability of slow maxillary expansion

Dr. Ginsberg uses expanders to "expand" or widen your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made.

"Treatment response and stability of slow maxillary expansion using Haas, hyrax, and quad-helix appliances," a study that was included in the American Journal of Orthopedics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, evaluates the short-and long-term effectiveness of different types of expanders.

Here are a few highlights of the study:
-84% of PXB correction remained with about one third of the initial expansion lost
-Haas, hyrax, and quad-helix appliances were equally effective
-Slow maxillary expansion altered the PXB patients' maxillary widths from narrower to slightly wider than the widths of the noncrossbite norms

For more information on this important study on expanders, be sure to check out the American Journal of Orthopedics and Dentofacial Orthopedics article. You can also give us a call if you have any questions.

Ask Dr. Ginsberg: At what age should my child begin orthodontic treatment?

The orthodontic community has been debating for some time about the best age for children to begin orthodontic treatment. Dr. Ginsberg, your experienced board certified Pennsylvania orthodontist, has been following the research surrounding the best age for orthodontic treatment. Today, Dr. Ginsberg would like to share a few of the important studies that were recently discussed in an interesting article about early orthodontic treatment.

In one 10-year study of 300 children that was conducted by the University of Florida, it was determined that "on average, early treatment produces the same results as later treatment. But again, the outcomes vary widely among children."

Smart Money magazine recently featured an article entitled “10 Things Your Orthodontist Won’t Tell You.” In this article, the number 5 thing is “Your child won’t die if he doesn’t get braces by age seven.

At the practice of Gerald Ginsberg, DDS, we make it our priority to accurately inform patients about their treatment options. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that your child be evaluated by age seven, as early detection of some orthodontic problems is important in order to take early corrective action and avoid more difficult treatment later. However, for many patients, Dr. Ginsberg recommends treatment during adolescence between the ages of 10-12.

To read more about these interesting studies on the best age to begin orthodontic treatment, visit the article. We also encourage you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Ginsberg to assess what the best age is to begin your child's orthodontic treatment.

A few Halloween safety tips, from Dr. Ginsberg

Trick-or-treat! In the spirit of October’s sweet and spooky holiday, Halloween, Dr. Ginsberg would like to remind all of our patients to be safe while celebrating with friends and family. The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, has provided trick-or-treaters with some tips for a ghoulishly good time.

A few Halloween safety guidelines:
• Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
• Carry a flashlight
• Wear a light-colored or reflective costume
• Choose face paint over masks for young ghosts and goblins
• Have an adult inspect all treats before the children dig in

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment. If you happen to damage your braces, please give Dr. Ginsberg and our staff a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone.

Dr. Ginsberg supports National Orthodontic Health Month

Can you believe October is already upon us? October happens to be National Orthodontic Health Month, and this month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time. The AAO recommends patients avoid the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice

If you happen to damage your braces, please give Dr. Ginsberg a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into our office.

A great article about orthodontic treatment at a young age, from Dr. Ginsberg

The world around us is always changing and evolving, which is why it's important that your orthodontist is informed on the latest research. Dr. Ginsberg recently found this great radio segment and article by NPR, discussing the latest research on the best age to begin orthodontic treatment, which he would like to share with all of our patients.

Did you know that the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that your child be evaluated by age seven? Early detection of some orthodontic problems is important in order to take early corrective action and avoid more difficult treatment later. For many patients, however, Dr. Ginsberg recommends treatment during adolescence between the ages of 10-12. There are often benefits for deferring orthodontic treatment, although it is best to evaluate patients on a case by case basis.

For more information on the best age to begin your orthodontic treatment, give us a call today. We look forward to seeing you!

Ask Dr. Ginsberg: How can Invisalign® benefit my oral health?

When considering treatment options, patients often ask us how Invisalign is so different than traditional braces. There are more reasons to smile about Invisalign with Dr. Ginsberg than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health.

Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Dr. Ginsberg the next time you’re in for an appointment. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! You can also read this article for more information on Invisalign and your oral health.

Ask Dr. Ginsberg: What’s so bad about nail biting?

Everyone has heard that biting your nails is an awful habit, but you many wonder- really- what’s so bad about it? Recently, our team at Gerald Ginsberg, DDS found an interesting article that discusses how nail biting affects your oral health.

Nail biting, also known as Onychophagia, is a common habit and is generally triggered by stress, often decreasing with age. That being said, nail biting is unsanitary, unattractive, and unhealthy for your teeth!

Here’s why:

It’s unsanitary. Your nails are dirty, almost twice as dirty as your fingers! Hence, biting your nails is just asking for germs and bacteria.

No good things come to your teeth. Nail biting causes your teeth to constantly be chewing, which is not good for them. This excessive motion wears your teeth down faster than a non-nail biter’s and puts a large amount of stress on your front teeth- contributing to teeth misalignment.

Braces don’t love it either. Braces already put pressure on teeth, nail biting ads unnecessary pressure, further stressing your teeth and weakening their roots.

It can be costly. Nail biting can result in up to $4,000 in additional dental bills over one lifetime, according to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Yikes!

What can you do about it?

Now that you know how harmful nail biting can be, it’s time to take action to break your nail biting habit. Try to be conscious of your fingernails and to keep them looking good- this will help you resist the temptation. Ask Dr. Ginsberg or visit this article for tips on how to break a nail biting habit.

Good luck!

Dr. Gerald Ginsberg and team present: Patriotic fun facts!

Tomorrow night, Dr. Ginsberg and our staff will be busy celebrating America's 234th birthday. And because we know most of our patients love fun facts, we thought we'd provide you with some patriotic fun facts about Independence Day!

- Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.

- An estimated 2.5 million people lived in America in July 1776. Today, an estimated 309 million people reside in the United States.

- The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation, which meant that people didn't want to be taxed by a government that did not represent them.

- In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.

- The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal.

- America's mascot, the bald eagle, can achieve speeds of up to 200 miles per hour when making a predatory dive. During a normal flight, bald eagles can travel up to 30 miles per hour.

- The American flag patch is backwards on U.S. Army uniforms. The reason? The blue field on the flag (the part with the stars) faces forward to symbolize carrying the American flag into battle.

- Someone who specializes in the history of flags is called a vexillologist.

- The word ‘patriotism’ comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or ‘fatherland.’

- According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans consume over 150 million hot dogs during their Independence Day festivities.

- Speaking of food, there's a 1-in-6 chance the beef on your backyard this Independence Day weekend grill came from Texas. The Lone Star State is America's leader in the production of cattle and calves.

Have a great Fourth of July weekend everyone! Please be careful with your fireworks!!

"Hey, Dr. Ginsberg! What can you tell me about fluoride?"

There are so many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Gerald Ginsberg: You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your mouth and appliances from being damaged. But did you know there's another way to keep your teeth sparkling and healthy during your treatment?

Fluoride! Yes, fluoride, a mineral that helps with cavity prevention and tooth decay, can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement. Orthodontists like Dr. Ginsberg use in-office fluoride treatments to help protect the oral health of adults and children undergoing orthodontic procedures.

Fluoride used in Dr. Ginsberg's office is often a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask Dr. Ginsberg how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. Dr. Ginsberg may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for in-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product, be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

A few Invisalign® tips from Dr. Ginsberg...

Dr. Gerald Ginsberg will tell you that Invisalign is a great solution to braces if you don't want to experience the look and feel of traditional metal braces. What few people know, however, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. Good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Dr. Ginsberg wants you to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

and...

3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits. If you have any questions about Invisalign or your treatment here at Gerald Ginsberg DDS, we definitely encourage you to give us a call!

Fun facts with Dr. Ginsberg!

At Gerald Ginsberg DDS, we know our patients love fun facts - LOVE THEM. The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, has come up with some fun facts about orthodontics that our team and Dr. Ginsberg thought you might enjoy.

• There are nearly 4 million people in orthodontic treatment throughout the United States. Three out of four are younger than 18.

• The first mechanical treatment for correcting irregular teeth was suggested by Gaius Plinius Secundus (A.D 23-79).The American Association of Orthodontists is comprised of more than 12,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.

• The time required to complete orthodontic treatment ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

• Of the 160,000 dentists in the United States and Canada, 8,000 are practicing orthodontists.

• The cement that attaches the braces to the teeth is now made with a special fluoride-releasing substance.

Dr. Ginsberg at the 110th AAO Annual Session!

If you know Dr. Gerald Ginsberg, you know his goal is to give his patients a fun, educational, beneficial orthodontic experience, resulting in a smile that they are excited to share. One of the many ways he achieves that goal is by attending important conferences and lectures. You see, continuing education is an important part of Dr. Ginsberg’s work as an orthodontist. With continuing education he is able to stay on the cutting edge of current orthodontic treatments and always offer his patients the most sophisticated treatment options.

This past weekend, Dr. Ginsberg attended the 110th AAO Annual Session in Washington D.C., an opportunity for him to mingle with dental experts and some of the top orthodontic specialists in the world. The AAO Annual Session is always an educational event that is one of the largest orthodontic conventions on the planet - and one that allows Dr. Ginsberg to stay up-to-date on all the latest technologies and orthodontic treatment options available. This, in turn, allows him to give you, our wonderful patients, the best treatment experience possible.

A proud member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Dr. Ginsberg is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a member of some prestigious institutions including the American Dental Association, College of Diplomates of The American Board of Orthodontics, Montgomery County Dental Society, Pennsylvania Dental Society, Pennsylvania Association of Orthodontists, Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists and the Greater Philadelphia Association of Orthodontists.

If you've got an appointment scheduled with Dr. Ginsberg soon, he encourages you to ask him about his perspectives on the AAO Annual Session, including what he learned and how continuing education and acquisition of new technology helps him treat you more effectively.

Happy Monday!

Talking retainers with Dr. Ginsberg

If you recently completed treatment at the orthodontic office of Gerald Ginsberg, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Ginsberg will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Ginsberg is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Ginsberg, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call!

Patient question for Dr. Ginsberg: Are there benefits to early orthodontic treatment?

Our office has been approached by some patients asking about the need for early orthodontic treatment. It is the policy of some orthodontists to start treatment at age 8 or 9 followed by a second stage when the permanent teeth erupt.

The questions have been analyzed by a number of research studies in which the policy of starting treatment at age 8 or 9 and then a second stage when the permanent teeth come in was compared to waiting to begin treatment later with only one stage of treatment. The results of these controlled comparison studies have shown that there was no difference in the final orthodontic results. On the other hand, there have not been any studies showing any benefits from two stage treatment.

The child who started early was in treatment longer, and there were extra costs involved. There has also never been any research showing that expanders placed on children with no crossbites have any effect on whether permanent teeth will require extraction

Of course are some types of problems which should be started early. These include crossbites (when the upper teeth are inside the lower teeth) either the front or side teeth, when the child is being affected socially by other children, or when problem is affecting self image. If you would like to obtain copies of some of these studies we shall be happy to send them.

Also, if you would like to discuss this information information, Dr. Gerald Ginsberg will be happy to talk to you.

Ask Dr. Ginsberg: What’s so special about an orthodontist?

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" Our staff at Gerald Ginsberg DDS hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Dr. Ginsberg started out in dental school and earned a DDS (dental degree), just like your dentist. After dental school however, Dr. Ginsberg received his orthodontic certification from the American Association of Orthodontists, and he became a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Today, Dr. Ginsberg remains true to his goals: give his patients a fun, educational, beneficial orthodontic experience, resulting in a smile that they are excited to share! Isn't it nice to know there's an expert here to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

The importance of regular adult checkups, from Dr. Gerald Ginsberg

Are you brushing your teeth twice a day? If yes, that’s great; but, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit your dentist every six months in addition to brushing your teeth a couple times a day and flossing (and visiting Dr. Ginsberg, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health.

Your dentist can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

During an oral exam the dentist will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!

PS if you have any questions about your treatment at Gerald Ginsberg DDS, please give us a call. Dr. Ginsberg and team would love to hear from you!

Ask Dr. Ginsberg: Am I too old for braces?

Who’s afraid of “metal mouth” and the appearance of braces? Not adults, apparently. Recently, our staff at Gerald Ginsberg DDS read a fascinating statistic: adults getting braces has jumped 24 percent from just 14 years ago! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: cosmetics. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Gerald Ginsberg can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Ginsberg would love to have you visit for a consultation. Give us a call to set one up!

Dr. Gerald Ginsberg, supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month

Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

For kids wearing traditional braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.

If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Dr. Gerald Ginsberg is available to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited Gerald Ginsberg DDS lately? Give us a call!

Dr. Gerald Ginsberg discusses teeth grinding

Grind, grind, grind. If you live with a teeth grinder, you may be familiar with this unpleasant sound. Other symptoms of teeth grinding (technically called “bruxism”) include:

• Sensitivity in the teeth
• Tightness or pain in the jaw
• Dull headaches, earaches, or facial pain
• Chipped, worn down, or loose teeth

People (and children) frequently grind their teeth in response to stress, so taking measures to reduce or eliminate stress can help solve the problem. Here are some things you can try to stop grinding:

• Cut back on caffeine and alcohol
• Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
• Relax right before bedtime with a warm bath or shower
• Help your jaw learn to relax by quitting chewing habits (pens, pencils, gum)
• When clenching or grinding happens during the day, place your tongue between your teeth to serve as a reminder to avoid the habit

If grinding goes untreated, it can lead to chipped teeth, worn enamel, chronic pain, or even TMJ, a painful jaw disorder. If the teeth-grinder in your house can’t stop, schedule an appointment with us at Gerald Ginsberg DDS as soon as possible. Dr. Ginsberg can help determine the cause of the problem and possibly even prescribe a custom mouthpiece to help break the habit.

Ask Dr. Ginsberg: When should my child come in for a check-up?

Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to see Dr. Ginsberg, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

Ok, you say, what’s so great about age seven? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Ginsberg and our team to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age 7, give us a call to schedule an appointment.

The advantage of Invisalign Teen™ at Gerald Ginsberg D.D.S.

You already knew that Dr. Ginsberg was a certified Invisalign provider, but did you know he provides Invisalign Teen treatment as well?

For many teens, Invisalign Teen offers a trouble-free, clear alternative to traditional braces; and not only that, but it offers them the chance to have straight teeth without losing self-confidence!

Invisalign Teen works in the same way as Invisalign, but with a few added characteristics tailored specifically to teenagers’ lifestyles. For instance, Invisalign Teen is designed with “compliance indicators” that fade from dark to light during the two week period that particular tray is used and once it has faded teens know to change trays. Each aligner comes with up to six free individual replacement aligners in case the original aligner ends up lost or broken. Another big benefit for the patient!

The treatment period for Invisalign Teen varies from nine to 18 months. If your teen is considering orthodontic treatment, please contact us and we’ll answer any questions you may have about Invisalign Teen.
